Making friends all around the world

Bavaria 2024

Young Americans and Scots spend an eventful 18 days in the district

Many tears were shed when the young people from America and Scotland said goodbye. A total of seven boys and girls were accommodated for 18 days in host families in the district and the town of Weiden. Many close friendships were formed, making it particularly difficult to say goodbye. The “ice breaker games” at the Schätzlerbad, which were organized by Felix Steiner, Chairman of OF Bayern, right at the beginning of the programme, contributed to this. However, the numerous joint activities and trips also contributed to growing together. These included a day at the Monte Kaolino amusement park, an adventure day at the Remmererhof farm in Moosbach with bread baking and horse riding, a scavenger hunt through Weiden, a visit to the Floß brewery and trips to Regensburg and Munich. The program also includes a visit to the Flossenbürg memorial site, a hike to the castle ruins followed by a visit to the leisure facility at Gaisweiher. The group also gladly accepted the invitation of District Administrator Andreas Meier.

Then, as always, they went to the Neustadt fire department. Here, the young people learned a lot of interesting facts about the different areas of responsibility of the volunteer firefighters. The international guests were particularly surprised by the fact that all this is done without being paid a cent. The kids, including Mayor Sebastian Dippold, experienced a surprising but welcome cool-down with the “water application” of the tunnel fan. At the end, he presented everyone with a pin from the town of Neustadt.

The youngsters were particularly impressed by Neuschwanstein Castle and Linderhof. Brenden Bartlett, the American supervisor, commented on Facebook: “This was the most amazing and breathtaking thing for all of us. You have to see it to believe it.”But what thrilled her most was the fact that you quickly grow into a new circle of friends with people who were initially strangers in a very short space of time. Sierra from Massachusetts commented: “It was a cool experience to make new friends, and not just with the teenagers,
